Cerium conversion coatings on aluminium alloys

Conversion coating is formed on the metal surface by an electrochemical or chemical process. In the past, the most important coatings used for corrosion protection of aluminium alloys were chromate conversion coatings. Due to their negative impact on the environment and human health, alternatives have been sought in the last decades. Among those, coatings based on cerium (rare earth metal) are chosen to be the focus of this lecture. Both have been investigated for almost 40 years, bringing scientific data on coatings' formation mechanisms and properties regarding their composition, structure, thickness, and corrosion performance. In the first part of the lecture, some basic considerations of the chemistry of Ce salts and the general mechanism of coatings formation will be presented. This will be followed by the examples from our research work on this type of coatings, aiming to point out some specific issues which are still open to further investigation.
Dr Ingrid Milošev is the Head of the Department of Physical and Organic Chemistry at the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where she has worked since 1987. Dr. Milošev received a BSc in Chemical Technology in 1986 from the University of Zagreb and a PhD in Chemistry in 1993 from the University of Ljubljana. In the 1990s, she was a visiting researcher for two months at the University of Sherbrooke in Canada and then for almost two years at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Heinrich-Heine University in Duesseldorf, Germany. Her interest in corrosion protection methods includes corrosion inhibitors, sol-gel coatings, conversion coatings, and inorganic coatings. She serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals.
